Painting & Staining Questions:

Re-staining Cabinets:

Question:

I would like to re-stain our bathroom cabinets from a pine wood color to English walnut - do we need to sand before re-staining and is there some type of top coat sealant to protect from moisture from showering?

Answer:

Generally cabinets have a clear sealer over their color coat (stain) It is necessary to sand through this top coat in order for the new color to penetrate the old to re-stain. Once you have successfully re-stained there are several products available to clear coat and protect the stained wood from water damage i.e. Bauer , Minwax, Polyurethane etc.. Gordon

Cabinet Re-staining:

Question:

Can I apply a lighter finish over my oak cabinetry that has yellowed without stripping, sanding and applying a finish coat.

 Answer:

Unfortunately most cabinets have some sort of polyurethane or clear lacquer top coat to seal in the color and to keep it stain resistant. So in order to re-stain and get an even color you have to strip, sand, re-stain and re-seal afterwards. If you don't then you will be putting a stain on top of a sealed surface that won't absorb and it will simply wipe off each and every time you touch, handle or rub up against it. I know there are companies that specialize in this type of sophisticated re-finishing and there others that offer re-facing and re-dooring leaving the bases intact while giving the kitchen a face lift. Hope this helps, Gordon

Re-Painting Over Exterior Paint:

Question:

I painted some trim in an exterior acrylic. Is it alright to paint over it with an interior latex?

Answer:

It shouldn't be a problem, both are compatible. The only thing you might have to do is scuff up the painted surface with some 220 sandpaper. I would try a small section and see how it adheres then do the rest. Gordon

Five Minute Fence Stain:

Question:

I’m wondering how long I should wait to let my new fence weather before staining? Also, I was looking on the internet and saw a web site for a five minute fence stain company. After looking at the web site it seems like a good concept, but there is some doubt about the product! Have you ever used or heard about this product? Could you give me your review on it !

Answer:

Weathering is the process of the wood being baked by the sun, dampened by the rain etc.. I think that it creates a appealing visual to a point then its time to protect the investment that is being depleted. Stain helps to seal out the moisture and if it contains a UV screen then it will slow down the suns harmful rays. I have not used this 5 min. stain so I really can't help you there, but being a traditionalist over the past 36 years of being in the business I personally tend to be a little more conservative when it comes to gimmick products that short cut time tested methods. I hope these has been helpful, Gordon
