Finish Carpentry Questions:

Crown Molding:

Question:

When installing crown molding in a stairwell, how do you finish the end of the molding that butts to the main floors ceiling

Answer:

Since the stair well piece is wider because of the angled cut then you have two options 1) simply cut the bottom flush at the thickness, which will probably cut through some detail, not the best. 2) Construct a rectangular corner made of slightly thicker stock and butt the ends of the crown to it. It not only solves the problem but it also gives it a craftsman like touch to the job. Gordon

Crown Molding:

Question:

I am installing 45 degree crown molding around a 90 degree rounded outside corner. If  I cut the crown at the 45 degree angle and butt the two ends together, it leaves an unsightly gap. Also, the 45 degree angle doesn’t look well with the rounded corner. I first tried cutting the crown a bit short and filling the gap with a one inch strip. I realized the strip of crown was way to short to fit in the rounded gap. How do I go about cutting 45 degree crown to form around a rounded corner?

Answer:

I believe that if you cut your ends 22.5 degrees and then cut a small end piece the same you will be happier with the results. Use a little sand paper to smooth them of. Play with some scrap but if I remember correctly that combo should work for the bull nosed corners. Gordon
